Historically, hospice is a way station, a place of hospitality where travelers could stop for a rest and refreshment before continuing on their journey. Today, hospice is not a place, but the name for a philosophy of care that provides pain management, palliation (relief from symptoms) as well as emotional and spiritual support to terminally ill patients and their families.
Hospice is designed to support them as they deal with the patient's illness and death. The patient and caregivers together are considered the unit of life. The emphasis in hospice care is to enhance the quality of life while preserving the patient’s sense of dignity and self worth. This includes providing the terminally ill person with optimal pain relief, encouraging participation in their plan of care; and assisting them in their desire to stay at home under the care of the family, friend and visiting professionals.
Mt. Sinai Hospice strives to provide both you and your dying loved one comfort and control over their lives, providing dedicated support in their final days. Hospice care focuses on helping people and those that love them cherish each other as fully as possible. Hospice celebrates the life of the individual and assists patient's families
